DocuSign and similar e-signature platforms charge enterprise-level prices for what most small businesses and freelancers actually need: a simple, reliable way to send and receive signed documents. Teams were paying $25-$45/user/month for features they never used, and the UX felt bloated and dated. The market needed a lean, modern alternative that handled the core workflow (create, send, sign, done) without the overhead.

We built SigPen as a focused SaaS product centered on the core signing flow. Key decisions included a drag-and-drop document builder for placing signature and form fields, email-based signing links that require no account creation for signers, audit trail generation with IP/timestamp logging for legal validity, Stripe Billing for subscription management, and a clean dashboard for tracking document status. The stack (Next.js, Node.js, PostgreSQL) was chosen for developer velocity and cost-efficient hosting.

SigPen launched as a direct competitor to DocuSign at a fraction of the price. The streamlined UX means most users can send their first document within minutes of signing up. The platform handles the complete e-signature workflow: document prep, signer notification, signature capture, and PDF finalization, with full audit trail records that meet legal requirements in the US and EU.
